Google's console had no console and, soon, no Google.
CAUSE OF DEATH: Shut down for "lack of traction" after three years and one first-party game about a worm.
Google launched Stadia on November 19, 2019 with 22 games and a pitch that the console was now the cloud. The Verge's reviewer said "this is a beta product" and "even in the best conditions, this ain't the best." In February 2021 Google shut its own game studio, about 150 people. On September 29, 2022 it announced the end, "citing its lack of traction with users." Five days before closing, Stadia released Worm Game, a snake clone used for internal testing. That was the only first-party title it ever got. Google refunded every hardware and game purchase made through its own stores. The refund was the most popular feature.
