Internet Explorer shipped in August 1995, and Microsoft won the first browser war by bundling it with Windows. In the late 1990s Microsoft was spending over $100 million a year on it, with more than 1,000 people. It paid $5 million to settle a lawsuit over who owned the name "Internet Explorer." By 2003 it had 95% of the market. Then it stopped trying. Its security flaws made much of the internet's spyware and viruses possible. In 2019 Microsoft's own security chief told people to stop using it as their default. By 2022 its share was under 3%, and support ended that June. One version is supported until 2032. It is late to its own funeral.
