LiveJournal started on April 15, 1999 so one programmer could keep his high school friends posted. It became the place a generation published feelings that belonged in a drawer. It was sold in 2005, then sold again in 2007 to a Russian media company. In December 2016 the servers moved to Russia. In 2017 new terms of service prompted an "exodus" of users who wanted to keep discussing LGBT rights. By late 2012 it had 39.7 million accounts, of which 1.79 million were "active in some way." That is a 95% vacancy rate. Its mascot is a goat named Frank. Frank is the only one who stayed.
