Flash
It ran everything. Including your laptop fan.
CAUSE OF DEATH: Steve Jobs wrote it an open letter. Adobe finished the job with a kill switch.
By 2005 Flash was installed on more computers than any other web media format. It powered every game, every cartoon and every restaurant website with an intro you could not skip. It was also a security hole with a play button. In 2010 Steve Jobs wrote an open letter explaining why it would never run on iOS, citing its closed nature and its security problems. Adobe had paid about $3.4 billion in stock for the company that made it. It announced the end in 2017. Support stopped on December 31, 2020. Twelve days later a built-in kill switch blocked it from playing anything. A separate version is still distributed in China. Even death has regional licensing.
