In June 2006 Myspace was the most visited website in the United States. In February 2005 its chief, Chris DeWolfe, had turned down a chance to buy Facebook for $75 million. News Corp paid $580 million for it, then signed a $900 million ad deal with Google that stuffed the pages with so many ads the site slowed down. In 2007 it was valued at $12 billion. In 2011 it sold for about $35 million, with Justin Timberlake among the buyers. In 2019 it emerged that a server migration had destroyed everything uploaded from launch to 2015, more than 50 million songs. As of October 2024 it is read-only. Tom is no longer your friend.
