Color
Reportedly said no to $200 million. Sold for parts.
CAUSE OF DEATH: Raised $41 million and had under 100,000 active users six months after launch.
Color is what happens when investors fund a résumé. Its founders got $41 million before the app launched. They spent $350,000 of it on the domain name. Google reportedly offered $200 million before launch and was told no. The app launched on March 24, 2011. It showed you photos taken by strangers standing near you, a feature also known as looking up. One co-founder left within three months. By September it had under 100,000 active users. "We threw a mountain at people," a co-founder said. It shut down at the end of 2012, with the staff reportedly sold to Apple for $2 to $7 million. That is a discount of at least 96% on the offer they turned down.
