Readability launched in 2009 to strip the junk off web pages so you could read them. Then it had a bigger idea: charge readers a subscription and hand 70% to publishers. Apple rejected the app in 2011 for dodging its 30% cut. In 2012 John Gruber called the company "scumbags," noting that only a portion of that 70% reached publishers who had registered. He called that "misleading at best, and arguably dishonest." Every service was terminated on December 10, 2016. A tool built to remove clutter became clutter.
