Beats Music launched on January 21, 2014, then ran a Super Bowl ad starring Ellen DeGeneres. Its signature feature was The Sentence, which built a playlist from four blanks you filled in. It was Mad Libs for people with no friends to ask. Four months later Apple announced it was buying the headphone company and the streaming service together for $3 billion. The Wall Street Journal reported Apple valued the streaming part at "slightly less than $500 million." The service was the box the headphones came in. It stopped taking subscribers the day Apple Music launched and was discontinued on November 30, 2015.
