HTC is alive the way a mall is alive after the anchor store leaves. It built the first Android phone, the HTC Dream, in 2008. In the third quarter of 2011 it was the largest smartphone vendor in the United States, with 24 percent of the market. In the first quarter of 2013 its profit fell 98.1%. In 2017 Google agreed to pay $1.1 billion for about half of its 4,000 employees and a licence to its phone technology. HTC kept the name and the losses. It has reported a net loss every year from 2019 to 2024, while revenue fell from 10 billion Taiwan dollars to 3 billion. It says it still makes phones. Few people could name one.
