Ello launched in 2014 with a manifesto that said "You Are Not a Product" and, as it turned out, no reason to come back. It surged when people left Facebook over the real-name policy, and at its peak took more than 30,000 signup requests an hour. An estimated 20% were still active a week later. It raised $5.5 million in venture capital in the same month it declared itself a benefit corporation, which is how you take the money and the high ground at once. It became a site for artists, was sold in 2018 for an undisclosed amount, and went offline in July 2023. Nobody noticed until this sentence.
