Twitter decided it needed a stories feature and called it Fleets. They launched on November 17, 2020 and vanished after 24 hours. The plan was to coax quiet users into posting. Instead Fleets were generally used by people who already tweeted a lot. In June 2021 Twitter announced ads for Fleets. In July it announced Fleets were dead. They were gone by August 3, under nine months after launch. The name turned out to be the most accurate part of the product.
