Kazaa
Free music, free movies, free spyware.
CAUSE OF DEATH: Paid the music industry $100 million, then tried going legal. Nobody came.
Kazaa arrived in March 2001 and gave the world free music with a side of malware. In 2006 StopBadware identified it as a spyware application. Its bundled software collected your surfing habits and passed them on. An unofficial version called Kazaa Lite became almost as widely used as the real thing. Users pirated the piracy app. Its owner was headquartered in Australia and incorporated in Vanuatu. In 2006 it agreed to pay the four major music companies $100 million. It came back as a legal subscription service. The website was dead by August 2012. Its backend technology became the basis for Skype. The good idea escaped.
