Wunderlist
Microsoft bought it, cloned it, and closed it.
CAUSE OF DEATH: Replaced by Microsoft To Do, an app built by the Wunderlist team to replace Wunderlist.
Wunderlist launched on November 9, 2010 from a small Berlin company and grew to over 13 million users with a to-do list people enjoyed opening. Microsoft bought it in June 2015 for between $100 million and $200 million. Two years later Microsoft announced it would be discontinued in favor of Microsoft To Do, a new app built by the Wunderlist team. They were paid to dig the grave. In September 2019 the co-founder went on Twitter and publicly asked Microsoft if he could buy it back. Three months later Microsoft announced the shutdown date. It closed on May 6, 2020. He started over with a new app in 2024.
