Foursquare
You are the mayor of nothing now.
CAUSE OF DEATH: Sunset its own app in December 2024 after 15 years of asking where you were.
Foursquare launched in March 2009 and convinced adults to compete for the title of "Mayor" of a coffee shop. Check in on more days than anyone in a 60-day stretch and the crown was yours. In 2010 a site called Please Rob Me launched to point out what broadcasting your location meant. In 2011 Foursquare raised $50 million at a $600 million valuation. In 2014 it split the check-ins into a second app, retired the badges and upset the only people who cared. The company became a location data business. The City Guide app was sunset on December 15, 2024. Your mayorships moved to a different app, which is how you know they were never real.
