HP paid $1.2 billion for Palm in 2010 to get webOS, and the TouchPad was the result. It launched on July 1, 2011 at $499.99. Stores sold 25,000 of the first 270,000. Forty-nine days later HP discontinued it and every other webOS device. The next day it cut the price to $99, and most stores reportedly sold out within hours. By December an estimated 903,354 had been sold. In the US, HP outsold every tablet maker but Apple in 2011 by setting its own product on fire. A member of the team later said it was made from "cast-off reject iPad parts." Hackers had Android running on it by October. Even its owners wanted it to be something else.
