Path
Turned down $100 million. Got fined $800,000.
CAUSE OF DEATH: Rejected Google's $100 million in 2011. Sold for an undisclosed sum. Shut down in 2018.
Path launched in November 2010 as the intimate social network. At first you were allowed only 50 friends, to "encourage greater sharing of personal information." It encouraged plenty. In 2011 Dave Morin, its co-founder, turned down $100 million from Google. In 2012 Path was criticized over concerns it was accessing and storing users' phone contacts without permission. In 2013 the FTC fined it $800,000 for storing data from underage users. It raised about $66 million and found its largest audience in Indonesia, with more than 4 million users. In 2015 it sold to Kakao for a price nobody would say out loud. The service ended on October 18, 2018. Fifty friends turned out to be generous.
