Grooveshark was founded in 2006 by three University of Florida undergraduates with a simple model: users upload music, everyone streams it, and the labels find out later. It reached 20 million users and 15 million songs. Universal cited internal documents showing employees had uploaded thousands of songs themselves. At $150,000 per alleged upload, Universal asked for an estimated $17.1 billion. Apple pulled the app. Google pulled the app, then scrubbed the name from autocomplete. In 2014 it started accepting Bitcoin, which is rarely a sign of health. On April 30, 2015 it shut down immediately and handed the labels everything. It was a jukebox running on someone else's quarters.
